It was an important and long-anticipated day for many Lake County officials and attendees who gathered to take part in the ceremonial groundbreaking of the South Lake Regional Park.
Guest Speakers at the event included Tim Sullivan, Chairman of the Lake County Board of Commissioners; Sean Parks, Lake County Commissioner; Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell; Groveland Mayor Dina Sweatt and David Colby, South Lake Chamber of Commerce President.
Each of the speakers expressed the critical need for the facility in one of the fastest growing areas in the County and the asset that the recreation park will bring to the community. It will provide citizens with a place to play, said Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell. “It’s better to build playgrounds than prisons. Families will be able to spend quality time together.”
When complete, the planned $18-million project, located at Max Hooks Road, Groveland will feature eight softball fields; four youth and two adult baseball fields; eight multi-purpose fields; two cricket fields, restroom and concession buildings; playgrounds; pavilions; volleyball, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts; boardwalk and nature trails; canoe launch; fishing pier; and dog park.
Lake County Board Chairman Timothy Sullivan described the future site of the 141-acre recreation park as a wonderful asset to the community, providing another reason for people to come to Lake County to live, work and play.
The first phase of the park will be finished in approximately 3 years. The entire project will take approximately 10 years.
