On July 4, 1776, thirteen American colonies claimed their independence from England. Since that historic day, each year on July 4th, Americans celebrate, not only our country’s independence but the anniversary of the birth of the United States. Fireworks immediately come to mind when thinking of the Fourth of July. John Adams, one of the founding fathers and second president of the United States, was said to have envisioned fireworks as part of the Independence Day celebration and, consequently, fireworks were set off. Two hundred and forty-one years later, fireworks remain a key part of the celebration.
If you decide to stay home, fire up the grill, prepare an All-American food fest and have your own fireworks display.
Remember, Safety First:
Be responsible: find a safe place, clear from buildings and vehicles; never give fireworks to children, light one firework at a time and quickly move away, never relight a dud, always have a ready to use hose nearby and place the used and duds in a bucket or trashcan and soak. Though this is one of man’s favorite holidays, animals become scared. Dogs are especially sensitive to the loud sounds of fireworks. Make your pet feel safe, comfortable and reassured.
The cities of Clermont and Groveland will be celebrating the 4th with fun activities and, of course, firework displays.
Clermont
The City of Clermont is gearing up for its annual 4th of July Red, White & Boom celebration at Waterfront Park. The free event runs from 6 pm – 10 pm and will include lots of traditional activities, such as a pie-eating contest, stilt walker, and old-fashioned games, in addition to a Kids Zone and popular, returning activities, like a Most Patriotic costume contest – for people and pets.
The grand finale will be fireworks over Lake Minneola starting at 9:15 pm
There will be live musical entertainment by Gary Roland and the Landsharks, a cover band performing Jimmy Buffet tunes, and dance performances at the Waterfront Pavilion.
The Kids Zone will include wet slides and bounce houses and rides on a trackless train.
The community is encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to watch the fireworks.
Off-site parking is available at First United Methodist Church, at 7th Street and State Road 50, and at Clermont Middle School and Cypress Ridge Elementary on East Avenue. Free shuttles will transport guests to and from Waterfront Park.
