Qualifying emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies are encouraged to apply for $33,276 in federal funds awarded to Lake County through the Department of Homeland Security/FEMA under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.
A local board made up of representatives from county government, United Way, the Salvation Army, The American Red Cross and advocates for the homeless, faith-based organizations and community partners will determine how the funds will be distributed.
Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must meet the following criteria:
- Be a private voluntary nonprofit/organization or unit of government
- Have a voluntary board established and be eligible to receive federal funds
- Have an accounting system
- Practice nondiscrimination
- Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs
Lake County has distributed emergency food and shelter funds to various organizations throughout the county, providing thousands of meals and assisting hundreds of individuals and families.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds may contact Stephanie Glass at 352-742-6519 or download an application online at www.lakecountyfl.gov/departments/community_services. Applications are also available at the Lake County Community Services Department, 315 W. Main St., Suite 233, Tavares, from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Applications must be received by 4 pm on Friday, Aug. 3.
