A transformation is being seen in historic downtown Clermont as the city’s economic base strengthens and renovations continue.
Many South Lake residents are new to the area and don’t realize that Clermont, specifically historic downtown Clermont, is rich in historic memories.
Do you remember Henderson’s Laundrymat (Sewing Machine Repair)? It is now the site of Suncreek Brewery, Michael’s Ali Coal Fired Pizza and Savoree.
Suncreek Brewery, Michael’s Ali Coal Fired Pizza, and Savoree is holding their soft opening on Tuesday, September 18. MAC’d OUT will be ready by the end of October.
Do you remember the local downtown market?
Florida Angler, a fishing outfitter, will open in late 2018 at 786 Montrose St. (Merchandise and lessons available.). The building is being totally renovated, yet keeping much of its historic charm. The Florida Angler will have a simulator so everyone can have the experience of reeling in a catch.
Ashley Condon, the co-owner describes it as a great workout. In fact, some people will prefer the Angler’s simulator over a workout at the gym.
Do you remember the First State Bank (later Bob’s Bar, Grunts, 801 City Grille)?
Bob’s Bar, a local bar located at 801 Montrose and 8th, was directly across the street from Patti Lu’s Casuals (now Yummi’s Yogurt ). Fifty years ago, Patti Lu’s was, at that time, the most fashionable women’s boutique in downtown Clermont. Twice a year, the owners would hold a season sale. Women would line up hours before the doors opened just to be one of the first to, hopefully, get fashionable items at BIG discounts.
No matter how early the sales-minded women arrived at Patty Lou’s, the men were lined up across the street awaiting the opening of their favorite establishment, Bob’s Bar.
All things must end. Eventually, Patty Lu’s relocated and Bob’s Bar was sold. Many of the early-bird patrons of Bob’s Bar found their way to the Lake Susan Lodge for their morning libations. Bob’s Bar was refurbished and opened as a restaurant called Grunts. South Lake County residents could finally boast of having more than one fine-dining restaurant in the area; The Crest (now The Crown Bar) was the other popular eatery in Clermont.
Grunts became LJ Grunts and eventually 801 City Grille. 801 City Grill is, once again, for sale and long-time locals are anticipating what awaits the building at the corner of Montrose and Seventh.
Do you remember the First National Bank-Clermont?
Crawford, Modica & Holt, a law firm, will be moving into the building built in 1921 to house the First National Bank, most recently the Clermont Herb Shoppe.

Do you remember French’s Upholstery?
