The Tomoka Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Clermont is pleased to sponsor an American Essay Contest for grades 5-12 in public schools, charter schools, parochial schools, and home schools in South Lake County. This contest is conducted without regard to race, religion, gender, or national origin.
Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8: American History
The Essay Topic for 2018-2019: The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the United States Congress on June 4, 1919 and was ratified on August 18, 1920. This amendment granted all American women the right to vote and hold elective office. Many Americans at the time viewed this as a radical change to the U.S. Constitution. Imagine you are living in 1919 while the women’s suffrage campaigns were having impact on Americans politically and socially. Discuss the pros and cons of this new amendment the U.S. Congress has passed.
Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12: Christopher Columbus
The title of the essay: “Comparing Ship Technology: The Ships Columbus Used Versus Ships of Today”. The three-ship fleet of Christopher Columbus included two ships known as caravels, Nina and Pinta, and one larger ship which served as Columbus’ flagship, Santa Maria. Discuss the advantages and disadvantage of these late fifteenth-century ships compared to the modern ships of today and how they would have been prepared for his voyage.
These essays will require historical accuracy, adherence to topic, the organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness.
The completed essays are due on or before November 30, 2018.
