It’s Tuesday evening, and while most folks are winding down, members of Sisters of Sound are just warming up. Months of hard work, rehearsal, and preparation paid off for members of this Lake County women’s a cappella chorus, as they placed 2ndin their area contest this spring and achieved scores high enough to qualify for International Competition in November. This will be the group’s 5thappearance on the international stage, where they will compete against approximately 25 other women’s choruses who all sing in the barbershop style.

Sisters of Sound director Tiana Sandh shares the impact of the experience. “International competition and convention is an amazing opportunity for our chorus members to be exposed to outstanding choruses of all sizes and to learn from some true masters of the craft in classes and coaching sessions. We always come away inspired and energized.”

One feature that sets Sisters of Sound apart from other Harmony, Inc. competing choruses is the inclusion of young singers, from around age 7 and up, several of whom join the chorus alongside their mothers or grandmothers. President of the group Emily Kurz says, “The youth members of our chorus bring a lot of energy and joy to our group. They are quick learners and they love to perform.”

In addition to the chorus qualifying, In A Chord, a quartet from within the ranks of Sisters of Sound earned the opportunity to compete at Internationals, as well as local youth chorus Unaccompanied Minors, also under the direction of Tiana Sandh.  Sandh hopes the success of the choruses and quartets at this year’s International will help to raise the profile of women’s a cappella singing in the Clermont area. “With the popularity of a cappella music at this point in time, the future of barbershop is bright. We are attracting a diverse group of singers: all ages, cultures, and experience levels. If you are a woman who loves to sing, we would love to hear from you. We are always looking to add new members to our chorus!”

Sisters of Sound rehearses on Tuesday nights from 6:30 pm -9:30 pm and women of all ages are invited to join them. They are also available to perform for local special events. Read more about the group at www.sistersofsound.org
