The keys on a manual typewriter were hard to press on and were connected to metal rods. When you pressed the key the rod swung up and struck the page. Between the rod and the page was an ink-soaked ribbon. And that was how each letter got imprinted onto the page. You young folks have no idea what was involved in making a correction to this product! If you want to find out, come to the Second Annual Heritage Day Festival at Clermont’s Historic Village on Saturday, November 3rd from 10 am until 4 pm.
The Historic Village is located at 490 West Ave in Clermont on the shores of beautiful Lake Minneola and is the result of a unique partnership between the City of Clermont and the Historical Society. Together the City and the Historical Society have created a beautiful village featuring two homes built in Clermont in the late 1800’s, the original Cooper Memorial Library (where you will see the typewriter), the city’s last train depot, a World War II Quonset hut, and two replicas. People from countries around the world have visited the Village. Have you?
After touring the Village on November 3rd, the Clermont Downtown Partnership invites you to go into the historic downtown area (just a few short blocks from the Village) to attend the Art Festival. In addition to over 30 talented artists vying for prizes, there will be more than 20 crafters, a chalk art contest for children and much, much more. The Art Festival will be held on the 3rd from 10 am to 5 pm and the 4th from 10 am to 4 pm on Montrose Street.
The Historic Village is open every Friday from 1 am to 3 pm and every Saturday & Sunday from 1 am to 4 pm if you would like to see our historic buildings and simply cannot wait until November 3rd! Admission is free but a $2.00 donation per person is requested. If you are interested in history in general or the history of Lake County in particular, contact the South Lake County Historical Society by going to our website, ClermontVillage.org; by calling our manager, Roxanne Brown, at 352-432-3496 or by attending one of their membership meetings which are held on the second Monday of the month at 7 pm in the Train Depot in the Historic Village.
