Boy Scouts pursue Geneology research

The Pastfinders Genealogy Society will be holding its 8thannual 4-6 week workshop for Scouts seeking their Genealogy Merit Badge.  In this class, while the basics of genealogy research are introduced, the joy and inspiration of discovering fascinating ancestors and the fun of becoming the family detective are part of the experience. The Boys Scout and his designated family adult partner will be assisted in completing 13 required tasks, as outlined by the Scouts manual and taught by a certified Merit Badge Counselor. Each scout attending regularly and participating fully can be assured of achieving this unique and challenging merit badge. while his family adult partner will be completing a beginners Genealogy 101 class, instilling professional standards and a grounding in the highest standards for genealogists. If interested please contact Joanne Close at  www.pastfindersslc.org or write to Pastfinders at 2525 Oakley Seaver Drive, Clermont.

Classes are held in the 2nd-floor Genealogy Room at Cooper Memorial Library and will begin with orientation for all pre-registered scouts and their partners on Wednesday, February 27 at 6 pm.

Studies show that children with a strong sense of family history gain a sense of belonging and pride and self-confidence, and often do better in school.  Through their awareness of family history, they are also gaining a perspective on human relationships.  Through their Genealogy research, they are being introduced to skills in computer research, history, geography, logic, sociology, and strong communication skills.  A Pastfinder representative will be visiting as many Scout Troops as possible between February 11, and February 25. If you would like a representative to come to talk to your troop, please contact Joanne Close.

Willing and interested troop committee members and  Merit Badge coordinators may arrange for such a visit by contacting Mrs. Close at www.pastfindersslc.org.
