Born December 1, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the oldest child of Julian Cecil and Betty Goddard. She attended Brush High School in Lyndhurst, Ohio, and graduated with a degree in Biology from The Western Reserve University in 1948.

Nicknamed Shorty by her classmates, Marilyn was small in stature only: She served as the president of her sorority in college and taught the third grade before becoming a Mom and raising four children. After moving to Florida, she worked at Clermont City Hall for ten years, served as an interim Executive Director for the South Lake Chamber of Commerce, and later as a Clermont Councilwoman. Her volunteer work at the Lake County Welcome Center led to a paid position with the County. She also volunteered as Executive Secretary for the South Lake Council for the Arts, and later at the Mike Conley Hospice House. Marilyn’s community work was recognized when she became a recipient of the South Lake Chamber’s “Gem of the Hills” award.

Marilyn is survived and dearly missed by her children, Chuck George and his wife, Sarah Chabot of Blacksburg, VA, Cathy Kyle and her partner Todd Brandenburg of Clermont, and Peggy Ruddy and her husband Shamus of Hinckley, OH. She leaves behind her grandchildren Michael George (Sarah) of Blacksburg VA, Jesse George (Sylvia) of Orting WA, Mallory Robison of Sharon Center, OH, Madeline Gomolka (Bryan) of Twinsburg, OH, Gracie George and Jolie George, both of Blacksburg, VA. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Maffitt of Bluefield, WV, and by 12 great-grandchildren. Marilyn was predeceased by her daughter Barrie George, grandson Seth Rakow, brother Edwin Goddard, and husband William MacLauchlin.
