Sixteen Lake County schools have been named 2018-19 Five Star Schools by the Florida Department of Education.
The annual award recognizes schools that are committed to incorporating family and community members into the school environment to enhance student learning.
“Family, business and school partnerships are essential to student success,” Jacob Oliva, Florida’s Chancellor of Public Schools, wrote in an announcement letter to district superintendents. “As an educator, I have witnessed the impact of engaging with stakeholders to support students in our schools. The result of these connections is higher academic achievement and more students prepared for the future.”
To earn Five Star School recognition, a school must show that it has achieved all of the benchmarks and criteria in five categories — Business Partnerships, Family Involvement, Volunteerism, Student Community Service and School Advisory Councils. Schools must also earn a grade of “C” or above or school improvement rating of “Maintaining” or “Commendable” for the year being recognized.
