In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as America’s Flag Day. It marks the Second Continental Congress’ adoption of the first U.S. national flag on June 14, 1777.
The first flag had 13 red and white stripes, the same as on today’s flag. The number and arrangement of stars have changed as the number of states has increased over the centuries. The current flag has remained at 50 since 1960.
