The South Lake Chamber of Commerce held its monthly breakfast meeting on Friday, November 20 at Sonny's BBQ. The breakfast sponsor was Bridgette Bennett of The Bennett Law Firm. Dr. Sean Martin was the guest speaker.

South Lake Chamber of Commerce attendees had an opportunity to hear guest speaker, Dr. Sean Martin of Transcend Performance & Lifestyle Institute, discuss current rumors, myths, and truths on popular nutrition strategies in a non-confrontational and judgement-free setting. “We’ve all experienced the seemingly innocent and perhaps unsolicited advice from a friend or family member on the “best diet, said Dr. Martin.  “In truth, the best diet is individually specific and should be based on actual data, not anecdotes”.

Prior to starting Transcend Performance & Lifestyle Institute, Dr. Martin served within the Air Force’s first Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Therapy Clinic and within the office of the Surgeon General for Air Force Special Operations Command.

Dr. Martin is an Osteopathic Physician specializing in a treatment approach that is not often found outside of professional sports. He has developed an innovative synergy between healthcare and measures to improve how to live and perform.

Having completed medical school in 2007 at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he concentrated on both Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Dr. Martin then went on to complete an Internship and Residency at the renowned Eglin Air Force Base Family Medicine Residency Program. He was then selected to continue straight to Fellowship training in Sports Medicine, a rarity in Air Force medicine.  He received training in Sports Medicine in Washington DC, where he had the opportunity to treat athletes at all levels with The Naval Academy, Georgetown University, The DC Divas Professional Football Team, and the famed Nirschl Orthopaedic Center for Sports Medicine and Joint Reconstruction in Arlington, Virginia.

Upon completion of the Fellowship, he then returned to his own Family Medicine Residency Program, where he served as Faculty for 4 years.  During this time, in addition to teaching the full scope of Family Medicine, he stood up the Air Force’s first Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Therapy (S.M.A.R.T Clinic)- with physicians and physical therapists seeing patients alongside one another, this model is now considered the gold standard in Air Force sports medicine clinics.

From there, Dr. Martin, assumed a new position at the Office of the Surgeon General for Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC).  In that role, he served as the first-ever Sports Medicine Physician in AFSOC, pioneering the delivery of this specialty globally to extremely highly trained special operations troops.  This included the design and implementation of a course for providers from varying backgrounds on the delivery of state of the art as well as advanced Sports Medicine care.  He also served as a subject matter expert on Human Performance, participating in numerous research endeavors to optimize how special operations members perform.   This role was then broadened to include providing similar expertise to the Surgeon General’s Office at the joint Special Operations Command Headquarters in Tampa, FL.
