In 1954-55 land was purchased on the east side of East Avenue and it was there that Clermont High School (CHS) was built. By 1960, the campus had a football/athletic field and bleachers, a gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium and band room. In 1993, South Lake High School was built and Clermont High School and Groveland High School merged, thus ending years of hometown pride and rivalry between the Clermont and Groveland. The vacant school became the home of Clermont Middle School.
Today, the school on East Avenue is undergoing another change. The building will be demolished and a new school will be built on the site. The Aurelia M. Cole Academy, named for the beloved educator who was a dean at Clermont High School, will serve students from K – 8th grade.
