Eleanor and Dave Lofgren

By Michelle Delaney and the Sisters of Beta Theta-ESA

Eleanor Elisa Titjen Logren grew up in New York and attended Erasmus High School.

She met her husband Dave Lofgren at a church celebration welcoming our “boys” home from World War II.  She reminisced, “Dave was wearing his uniform – and she said her first impression was a man of the world – sophisticated”.

Eleanor and Dave got married on a Thursday evening in New York and immediately drove to Florida where he had accepted a teaching position in Mulberry. Their first evening in Mulberry was spent at a room in the Men’s Boarding House; their first home was a converted army barrack two miles from town, on a  dirt road. That Monday, Dave started working as a teacher.  The plan was that Dave would increase his teaching skills in Florida and the couple would return to New York City after a few years. Later they moved to Clermont where he became principal of Clermont High School.

During their “temporary” stay in Florida, Eleanor had 4 children (Catherine, Neil, Eva, and John). She graduated from Lake Sumter State College (cum laude) and became well-known throughout the community for her service in her church and community. She volunteered for many years at South Lake Hospital and gave numerous hours to the United Methodist Church. She was one of the founders and charter members of Beta Theta ESA, a community service organization. She was an active member for 43 years. She was a prior member of Delta Nu.

Dave and Eleanor Lofgren were married for over 70 years. When she was asked what’s the secret to a long-lasting marriage? She answered, “I think Dave and I sort of drifted through life and it worked for us.  I wouldn’t change a thing. I have no tips or advice on “staying married”.  It’s a day-by-day battle.  So —  You just keep staying married.  (Unless he’s not worth keeping!)”

Dave Lofgren, former Clermont High School Principal, passed on July 11, 2020. He was 96 years old. Eleanor joins him for their Happily Ever After.  Both Eleanor and Dave leave behind lots of fond memories.

Eleanor was a member of Delta Nu and later became a member of Beta Theta-ESA, serving the South Lake community for over 50 years.

Funeral arrangements are forthcoming.
