The City of Clermont and the South Lake community joined together to celebrate the life and legacy of Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 17.
The morning was chilly as the East Ridge High School Marching Band, along with politicians, city and county officials, community leaders and local businesses began their march on foot, in cars, boats, floats, trucks, motorcycles to Clermont Waterfront Park.
The event was organized by the City of Clermont and Clermont Christian Men in Action with organizational support from Clermont Mayor Tim Murry, Kassier Murry, the Lincoln Park Rams Motorcycle Club, Buffalo Soldiers as well as with numerous dignitaries, organizations and businesses.
At Clermont Waterfront Park Pavilion, Cynthia Howell of the New Jacob’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church sang and introduced each of the speakers.
Speakers included Clermont Mayor Tim Murry, City Manager Brian Bulthuis, Clermont Police Chief Charles Broadway and keynote speaker Pastor Roger Jones of the Greater Macedonia Church of God by Faith-Clermont.
Mayor Tim Murry shared, “It is a great honor for me to be here today as the first African American Mayor in Clermont, made possible by Martin Luther King”. We are here today to keep the dream alive”.
Clermont City Manager Brian Bulthuis noted that it was a great honor to celebrate together, no matter the color of our skin. He added that Clermont is full of exceptionally great and diverse people.
During his speech, Police Chief Charles Broadway expressed how truly blessed he was to be part of a city where a Martin Luther King event is celebrated. The chief emphasized Martin Luther King Jr. words, “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk! If you can’t walk, then crawl! But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” This was an example of a man with a purpose, plan, and vision.” The Chief noted the important influence Martin Luther King had on his life and his belief in peace and leaving a legacy.
Entertainment was provided by the Full Force Dance Academy, Starband Performers and a Caribbean Steel Drum Band.

Despite a very windy and cold day, everyone seemed to enjoy the Living the Legacy Celebration.
Plans are already underway for a bigger celebration on January 16, 2023.
