CLERMONT (May 17, 2022) – Shovels of dirt were symbolically turned on a construction site off Hancock Road Monday morning in a groundbreaking event celebrating Clermont’s new Public Works Facility just in time for National Public Works Week.
“This new facility has been a long time coming,” City Manager Brian Bulthuis said. “Our 12th Street complex was built in 1989 when our population was about 7,000 people. Today, more than 44,000 people call Clermont home and we’re still growing.”
The $17 million facility sites on 17 acres off Hancock Road, just north of Hancock Park. It will feature a 5,240 square-foot building for administrative offices for services including fueling, fleet services, sanitation, cemetery maintenance, facilities and grounds maintenance, transportation, construction and inspection.
A 23,340 square-foot compound for city fleet maintenance activities including a circulation area for heavy equipment, will also be built. Other features include a fueling station and dedicated storage for equipment and materials for each division.
The facility will have modern emergency generator power and storm hardened infrastructure. Ample parking for fleet vehicles, as well as staff and visitors, is also part of the plan.
A 2014 assessment determined the existing complex was inadequate for future needs based on the anticipated population growth rates. Council members and city staff started working on the plans then and now, eight years later, construction is underway.
Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem Timothy Bates, who has served on the council since 2012 and remembers those early conversations said seeing this project through fruition is “extremely rewarding.”
The new facility is expected to be completed and operational by next July.
