Steve and Linda Smith with Kids at New Beginnings

Information submitted by New Beginnings

People, in general, have differing perceptions of a homeless person. Some think that they are lazy, addicts, thieves, etc. This population is referred to as the chronic homeless. Those that come to understand that the most common cause of homelessness recognize that they are victims of a situation. This includes divorce, loss of a job with little savings, major health change, death of a spouse, and mental health, along with loss of their home due to significant rent increase. This population is the situational homeless. Unfortunately, we have both types in central Fl, and around the world. Fortunately, most homeless people you meet are situational homeless. They experienced a recent event that caused them to lose their home.

New Beginnings was formed to help the situational homeless, as we do not have the resources to help rehabilitate the chronic homeless. Most of our clients have been referred to us by churches, schools, local agencies, counselors, and you; a person who cares.

Over the past 15 years, we have helped 500 homeless due to an unfortunate event.  We offer a Hands Up Program for those who want to turn their life around. The program includes housing, counseling, case management, job preparedness training, finance classes which includes budgeting, and a work-study program at our thrift store. Each homeless person is provided a volunteer mentor to help them restore hope and a path to normal health and happy life.
