Clermont Police Department

On 08/05/22, at approximately 8:15 pm, the Clermont Fire Department and EMS responded to a residence in the 1400 Block of W. Hwy. 50 for a medical call. The call was made by the wife of the subject, who both reside at this residence.

Shortly after arrival, the subject, a white male, age 81, displayed a firearm and began firing his weapon. No Clermont Fire Department or EMS personnel were injured, however, they immediately left the scene to a safe location and called for police assistance.

Clermont Police Officers responded and upon arrival began receiving gunfire from the subject. A Clermont Police Officer returned gunfire striking the subject at which time the subject stopped firing his weapon. The officers were able to secure the firearm and immediately began providing medical attention.

The subject’s wife was not injured during this incident and was relocated to a safe area. The subject was transported to a local trauma center to receive medical attention and is reportedly in stable condition. No officers were injured during this incident. The Clermont Police Department is cooperating with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement who was requested to respond and conduct an investigation. 

This subject has been identified as Wallace Sims Wainwright, a Clermont resident, born 11/09/1940. Wainwright remains in stable condition and continues to receive medical care. The Clermont Police Department, working very closely with the State Attorney’s Office, has issued charges on Wainwright for Attempted Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Attempted Murder of Law Enforcement Officer.

The Clermont Police Department continues to investigate this incident and continues to cooperate with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The officer involved in this incident remains on administrative leave with pay pending this investigation.

Chief Broadway stated that he is thankful that all of the first responders involved in this case are safe and they are able to return home to their families at the end of their shift. This is stark reminder of the inherent dangers that all first responders encounter on a daily basis
