Annika Sweatt has been volunteering with her grandmother, Dina Sweatt, since she was 2-1/2 years old.

In the summer and during holiday breaks from school, Annika works at the Neighbor Center of South Lake (formerly Faith Neighborhood Center). You may find her at the reception area greeting people when they come in through the front door or in the pantry and produce area.  She also works on other community projects.

Last year Annika made origami bookmarks and sold enough to raise almost $600 to buy toys and sports equipment for needy children.  The Groveland Police department distributed the toys.

This year she didn’t raise as much but her grandmother made up the difference and the two of them went shopping. They bought over $500 worth of toys and, once again, gave what they purchased to the Groveland Police department.

Although Annika is still in elementary school, she has had a very positive impact on her community.

Grandmother Dina Sweatt, a Groveland Councilwoman, says she wants Annika to realize how fortunate she is and that there are people out there in need of help.  I tell her,  “it’s not a handout but a hand up”.

Watch for Annika in the coming years. She is one of Groveland’s rising stars.
