The Clermont Police Department hosted the Lake County leg of the 40th Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics on Tuesday, April 25.
Each year, over 5,000 officers carry the torch on a 1500-mile relay through 67 counties in Florida. Law enforcement officers from over 300 Florida agencies, police departments, sheriff’s offices, Florida Department of Corrections, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Agency, U.S. Customs, Air Force Police and Florida Fish and Wild Life Conservation Commission (FWCC), all participate in the state-wide torch run to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Florida.
The Torch Run raises funds and awareness for year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Clermont Police Chief Charles Broadway carried the torch in a 2.5-mile-long loop, winding up and down hills along Oakley Seaver Driver (South Lake Trail), Don Wickham Drive, Hancock Road and Legends Way and back to the starting line.
