Sara Echavarria, a rising tenth grader at MVA, attended the National Student Leadership Conference at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and studied in the medicine and healthcare program.
For nine days, she learned a number of skills, such as suturing, intubation, performing CPR, performing ultrasounds, performing laparoscopic surgery, and assessing a medical emergency.
She also toured the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where a registered nurse and a primary physician spoke to students about various career options within the field. “It was all an amazing experience,” said Sara, “and apart from the medicine and the great learning experience, I had endless opportunities and was able to create lifelong friendships.”
