American Legion Post 55 members ground breaking with Mike Bucher, United Southern Bank and Clermont Mayor Gail Ash

In the early hours of January 19, 2015, a fire consumed American Legion Post 55-Clermont. Luckily no one was injured, but the building was destroyed. Post 55 eventually took a temporary home at 756 West Avenue, Clermont while awaiting a permanent location.

On Friday, January 25, members of Post 55 were one step further in achieving their goal of getting a new building. Post 55 members, its women’s auxiliary, friends and community, helped celebrate at the groundbreaking on property located at 1063 W. Desoto St. Clermont.

American Legion members Chuck McKenzie, 1stvice commander; Gene Biglin, past commander; Gary Breeza, commander; C.J. Byrd, Sargeant of Arms; and Dick Scott,   adjunct were a few of the people who were a guiding force in plans for the new Post. Michael Bucher, United Southern Bank, was also recognized as playing an important role in the project.

Eileen Scates, American Legion Auxiliary, President of Unit 55, said that they are looking forward to a safe, quick and blessed building completion, hopefully by July, “as long as Mother Nature plays nice”.
