The Leapfrog Group, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and IBM Watson Health have noted Orlando Health hospitals for their patient safety, overall quality, and inpatient mortality outcomes. Spring 2019 grades, released by the patient-safety advocates at The Leapfrog Group, graded three Orlando Health hospitals with A grades and two received B grades for patient safety. Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and Orlando Health South Lake Hospital were awarded A grades, and Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital and Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital received Bs.
In April, four Orlando Health hospitals became the only ones in Central Florida to earn four stars in CMS’ Hospital Compare Overall Ratings. Based on data for nearly 60 quality measures, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital, which operate under Orlando Health’s common CMS certification number, and South Lake Hospital were the only hospitals in Central Florida to earn four stars for overall quality. More than 3,700 U.S. hospitals were eligible for a star rating from CMS. Just over 1,000 received four stars.
In March, IBM Watson Health released results from its annual hospital quality study of approximately 5,000 U.S. hospitals. It ranked Orlando Health — composed of Orlando Health ORMC, Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips and Orlando Health South Seminole — in the top three percent of hospitals in the nation for inpatient mortality outcomes. IBM Watson’s risk-adjusted inpatient mortality index is one of 10 measures the company used to select its 2019 100 Top Hospitals.

The Leapfrog Group is a national organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The organization assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to more than 2,600 hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harm to patients. Pediatric and specialty hospitals such as Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital and Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies are not included in Leapfrog’s grading process.

CMS is a U.S. federal agency that administers the Medicare program and works in partnership with state governments to administer Medicaid services.
