More than sixty local children gathered early on Friday, December 20, at Target-Clermont to do their Christmas shopping with local police officers, active duty military, veterans, cadets and JROTC members in the guise of Santa’s helpers. This marks the sixth annual Heroes and Helpers event organized by members of the Clermont Police Department and hosted by Target and McDonalds, along with donations from the community.
The Clermont Police Department participated in fundraisers called “McCop Nights” throughout November to help raise funds for Heroes and Helpers. Officers assisted at local McDonald’s by serving food and accepting donations; McDonald’s also donated a portion of the sales. The Target Corporation donated funds through a grant to help make the shopping experience possible. Each child received a $100 Target gift card to spend.
“What makes our particular event so special is that the children are selected by our very own officers while they serve the community,” Clermont Police Sgt. Malcolm Draper said.
Clermont Police Chief Charles Broadway officially opened the shopping event.
While the Heroes and Helpers shopping spree was a family affair for many of the children, it was also a family affair for some of the helpers.
