Windy Hill Middle School has been named an AVID National Demonstration School, the second Lake County public school to earn the distinction.
“I could not be more proud of the hard work put in by our students, teachers and staff that has led AVID Center to certify Windy Hill Middle School as a National Demonstration School for AVID,” Principal William Roberts said. “This recognition confirms our mission to prepare our students for ‘life after the Hill,’ ensuring their success in a 21st century workplace. Being an AVID Demonstration School is a direct reflection of the awesome students and staff on the Hill, and I am very fortunate to be their principal.”
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), is a college-readiness system that helps narrow the achievement gap between high-performing and lower-performing students. It offers strategies to accelerate the performance of underrepresented students so they and their peers succeed in college, career and life.
Windy Hill, officially named an AVID National Demonstration School at a celebration at the school on Tuesday (Feb. 5), is among more than 170 such schools across the country and the 18th in Florida/Georgia. Students and staff can expect the school to be visited frequently by educators as a center for teaching and learning.
AVID National Demonstration Schools are selected through a rigorous application process, screening and review, which includes a site visit. They must be revalidated every few years to ensure high levels of implementation.
East Ridge Middle School was the first Lake school to earn the distinction in 2014. It was revalidated in December 2017.
